I have, for a long time, been disappointed with the GAP scoring system used in Hang Gliding competitions - maybe its time for a change.
GAP uses extremely complicated formulae and this makes it impossible to calculate results manually and quickly.
Pilots
have to develop strategies without knowing how effective those strategies will be until after the flying is finished.
PBS4HG uses simple calculations and allows pilots to easily predict the outcomes for different strategies.
How it works:
- Determine the "base points" available for each day based on the number of pilots entered times 4 (keep
this the same for the whole comp)
- Each day, the winner receives the "base points"
- Each pilot receives points based on the points of the pilot placed in
front of them
- If the pilot in front made goal then 4 points less
- If the pilot in front did not make goal then 3 points less
- If pilots are tied in a round then their points are averaged
- note 1: distances are rounded to 0.1 km, elapsed time is rouded to 5 second intervals
- note 2: pilots who did not fly (DNF) or flew less than the minimum distance (LO) will be treated as 1 pilot and scored as if they flew the minimum distance.
- note 3: pilots who were absent (ABS) will be treated as 1 pilot and scored one place after the DNF/LO pilots
- Ties in the Total scores are broken by deleting each pilots worst score, and repeated if still tied, and repeated... If a tie still exists then the tie will be broken using the last round scores only. No further attempt will be made to break a tie.
I've re-scored some of the previous FTTF competitions so you can compare the 2 scoring
systems.
